A stone wall is a course-by-course assembly of natural stone, either dry-laid (fitted tightly with no mortar, relying on weight and stone-on-stone friction) or mortared (bonded with a masonry mix over a poured or compacted footing). Dry-laid walls flex slightly with frost and drain freely, which makes them forgiving in New England ground. Mortared walls are rigid and load-bearing, so they need a footing set below the frost line and weep points so water never builds pressure behind the face.

How We Do It

On-site walk and measure
We visit the property, look at grade, drainage and the style of your home, and measure the run. You get a free written estimate with the wall type and stone options.

Base and footing
For dry-laid walls we excavate and compact a gravel base that drains. For mortared or load-bearing walls we set a footing below the RI/MA frost line so heave cannot lift it.

Stone selection and fitting
Airton hand-selects and fits each stone, breaking the vertical joints and keeping the face plumb. Fitting is done in place, not pre-sorted off a photo.

Capping and finishing
We set cap stones or a bluestone cap for a clean top line, backfill with drainage gravel where needed, and grade the base so runoff moves away from the wall.

Walkthrough
We walk the finished wall with you, clean up the site, and confirm you are happy before we leave.

A properly built stone wall lasts for generations. The failure point in New England is almost never the stone, it is the base. When a wall is set on a draining gravel base or a footing below the frost line, freeze-thaw cannot heave it, so it holds for decades with little to no maintenance.
A dry-laid wall is fitted stone with no mortar, held by weight and friction. It flexes with frost and drains on its own, which is ideal for borders and garden walls. A mortared wall is bonded and rigid, so it can carry load and go taller, but it needs a proper footing and weep points to handle water.
